new project
« on: August 25, 2017, 11:49:30 am »
Got a call to "come measure and draft this property"

I thought it was a house.  It was a Single Room Occupancy.   Apparently a step above being homeless.  28 rooms for rent, some as small as 7 ft by 10 feet, sharing 3 bathrooms and one small kitchen.  The smells were awful.   There was a big cockroach smashed into the rug in the hall.   They had bed bugs.  No doors on the toilet rooms.  Office carpet and none of it matched.

I'm really moving up in the world.  8 years ago I worked on a 20 million dollar mansion.  Now I work on slums.

Oh yea, one room didn't have any windows.

And the scope of the project is to add more rooms.

There were people with no sheets and a woman walking around outside in a grubby bathrobe.

I felt rich when I left.   I also felt itchy and sad.

The window in the shower did not have a screen, or glass.   It was just a hole in the wall.   wtf

How do the landlords have such little respect and concern for the people there?

I looked up the building during research.   It is historic!  Ain't no way we're going to be able to do much.

My partner and I looked at some rental property in a run down neighborhood one time. The people living there were some of the happiest people I have ever met. They were living in a house that the landlord had split into a duplex. One bedroom with a living area smaller than my office. The kitchen and bathroom was a galley about 6 feet wide and 15 feet long. You could almost take a shit and open the oven door without moving. One woman was disabled and had her granddaughter living with her in a space smaller than my garage. The girl had lost her mother and didn't know who her father was and grandma was all the family she had left. Grandma had a pacemaker and a defibrillator and looked like she die any day. Grandma and the girl slept in a bedroom that was 12 x 10 on 2 single beds. She was so excited at the prospect of new owners. She paid $400 a month rent and that included utilities.

I literally went home and cried for that woman.

People like that are just happy to be alive.  They are "blissfully ignorant" of all the the piddly shit the rest of us freak out over.  We've got a homeless guy who lives behind the Kangaroo, been there for years.  Never seen him without a smile on his face.

Yup, the property manager's unit had a 4'-6" wide kitchen wall to wall, a tiny bathroom connected to the kitchen with no door.... and he was all excited about his upcoming trip to an Indian Casino.

If I were that broke, I would never even consider going to a casino.   But it made him super happy.

Next time I saw him, he went on and on about the great buffet at the casino.

His wife didn't have any lower teeth that I could see, and they're out gambling.

And you know what?  they're both probably happier than I am.

Regarding the casino, you'd be amazed at the broke-as-fuck street people who don't have a pot to piss in, yet somehow always have money to smoke, gamble, and eat at the local indian casino.

I was making $250K+ a year and I never did any of that shit. Now I have nothing to show for all my work except diabetes.

I should have been irresponsible as fuck when they money was flowing. Why are scumbags able to pull off shit that responsible citizens like me can't? It's infuriating.
